Research was conducted on universal design principles and design for the aging population. On site observation was conducted at OSU Outpatient New Albany, with a specific focus on the functionality of the check-in process and waiting room conditions.
The desired experience is for patients to feel supported and reassured by their environment, leaving them with a sense of independence. Touch points and wayfinding elements guide users to the Rheumatology department. A check-in desk located at the front of the department provides patients with security and clarity in their journey.
CONCEPT
The desired experience when visiting Outpatient Care New Albany is for the patient to feel supported and reassured by their environment. This is done by utilizing clear language and wayfinding graphics to indicate the user’s journey. Touch points encountered throughout the journey should aid in a low stress experience. Wait spaces should be comfortable and calm experiences, providing areas of privacy and accessibility. The environment should embody the pride of an Ohio State facility and showcase the community through graphics and material usage.
STRATEGY
Rheumatology specific check-in desk created for reassurance. Patients clearly identify their department and staff presence aids a low stress user journey.
Light walls add clarity in wayfinding. Signage is illuminated to add visual attraction and breaks up long corridors.
Majority of check-in desk is at counter height, positioned so that wheelchair users can face the receptionist head on. Standing height portion of the desk is provided as a surface to lean against.
STRATEGY
Glass partitions utilized to provide privacy and patient refuge spaces. They also create an acoustic barrier from hallway traffic.

Hip chairs are given ample room to enter the seat. A mix of bariatric and hip chairs provided throughout waiting space.
